Which are the Best Biotin Shampoos?

Many people – men and women – find that biotin, whether they get this potent B vitamin from food, from a supplement or even from their shampoo, adds strength, shine  and volume to their hair. It may also help hair grow a little faster and encourage hair regrowth in areas where it was spotty.

There are a large number of shampoos on the market at the moment that heavily feature biotin as an ingredient. As is always the case with any beauty product that becomes very popular, they are not all created equal.

One of the early signs of a biotin deficiency in the body is otherwise unexplained hair loss and hair breakage, as well as dry skin and cracked, brittle nails. Read full article Biotin for hair

With the help of a group of testers, many of whom had thinner, dull hair that they felt needed the kind of boost that biotin might be able to offer to them, we tried out some of the most popular biotin shampoos the market at the moment (as well as a few more obscure brands) to see which ones really worked best.

Mill Creek Botanicals Biotin

Mill Creek Botanicals Biotin

This is an SLS free, but not completely all natural, shampoo that claims to blend biotin with keratin, elastin and cystine. The botanicals referred to in the shampoo’s name include jojoba and aloe vera and a shot of peppermint oil is designed to cool an irritated scalp while also giving the shampoo a gorgeous smell.

Most of the testers who tried this shampoo were impressed with it. Some said they could see a difference in both shine and volume after just a week of daily use. Those with a dry or itchy scalp problem felt that the botanicals did a great job of cooling and calming the itch and almost everyone who tried this shampoo loved the peppermint smell.

Nature’s Gate Shampoo Biotin Strengthening Shampoo

Nature's Gate Shampoo Biotin Strengthening Shampoo

According to the label on the bottle, this shampoo is designed to give a special boost to weak and thinning hair. The shampoo is made by Nature’s Gate, a company who are known for their vitamin supplements, so for many that seemed like a good sign.

Opinions about just how well it performed were divided though. Some felt that it did add some volume to their hair, while others felt it worsened an itchy scalp condition. Overall though, the testers who have a problem with hair loss felt that after using this shampoo for a few weeks they could see something of an improvement in terms of how much hair they lost in the shower.

Avalon Hair Thickening Shampoo

Avalon Hair Thickening Shampoo

This shampoo contains a large number of B vitamins, not just biotin. Thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin and riboflavin are all included as well. In addition to the ‘B’s the shampoo also contains saw palmetto and wheat protein both ingredients reputed to add volume to the hair.

The biggest complaint that users had about this shampoo was its price, because otherwise most were impressed across the board by the fact that the shampoo does what it says on the bottle, makes hair look thicker. No one really felt that it helped speed hair growth but it did give them the immediate visual effect they were looking for, shinier, thicker looking hair.

In addition to biotin and other B vitamins, it also contains chamomile for extra shine and ginseng.

Some of the testers who had a problem with hair loss felt that this shampoo helped, but it scored very high marks when it came to relieving an itchy, dry scalp as well. People almost all universally praised how shiny it left their hair, although some were disappointed by the lack of lather.

Nexxus VitaTress Biotin Shampoo

Nexxus VitaTress Biotin Shampoo

This shampoo makes some rather bold claims on the label, including that it contains amino acids that are DHT inhibitors (DHT is Dihydrotestosterone, a naturally occurring substance in the body and something that scientists feel plays a big part in hair loss in both men and women.) It also contains biotin, keratin and jojoba oil.

None of our testers saw any real new hair growth but most of those with thinning hair did notice a significant difference in the thickness of their hair, at least from a visual standpoint. Some also said that regular use seemed to help slow their hair loss down.

One Just for the Guys – Men’s Stock Ginseng Biotin Shampoo

One Just for the Guys - Men's Stock Ginseng Biotin Shampoo

Some of the shampoos on this list so far smelt a little too flowery and sweet for our male testers’ liking, although they did get some good results with some. The woodsier, ‘manly’ scent of this one was a much bigger hit in that department although some felt that right out the bottle it was rather pungent.

The biggest fans of this shampoo were guys with noticeably thinning hair who felt they could see an almost immediate improvement in how thick their hair looked, something that anyone with thinning hair is going to appreciate.

While no one felt that any of these biotin shampoos worked miracles, or suddenly gave them hair like Rapunzel’s, many of them did do many of the things that they claimed to. Shine and body were words that came up again and again, something that most put down to the B vitamins, especially the biotin.
